Sea Grant and NOAA Funding Opportunities for 2008 and 2009

John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowships—This program allows the graduate student to spend a year in Washington, D.C., in the legislative or executive branches of government. A stipend and living expenses of $34,000, plus travel allowance, and other expenses is provided. The total award is $43,500 which includes the interview trip to Washington, D.C. Students are strongly encouraged to contact Florida Sea Grant a few months prior to the application due date to discuss their application. NMFS/SG Fellowships in Population Dynamics and Marine Resource Economics—This graduate fellowship program awards a limited number of fellowships each year to students who are interested in careers related to the population dynamics of living marine resources and the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing their status (up to three years). The full announcement can be found on www.grants.gov at http://www.grants.gov/search/search.do?oppId=15343&flag2006=true&mode=VIEW.The program also awards a limited number of fellowships to students interested in careers related to the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing the economics of the conservation and management of living marine resources (up to two years). In both programs, fellows will work on thesis/dissertation problems of public interest and relevance to NMFS under the guidance of NMFS mentors at participating NMFS Science Centers or Laboratories. The annual award of $38,500 is paid by NMFS, National Sea Grant and the student’s university. Applications from students in Florida universities must be received at Florida Sea Grant by 4PM EST on January 25, 2008. Students are encouraged to contact Florida Sea Grant well ahead of the deadline to discuss the application.

Aylesworth Foundation for the Advancement of Marine Science Scholarships (Aylesworth and Old Salt)—Students at any of the 16 participating universities http://www.flseagrant.org/staff/part_institutions/index.htm in the Florida Sea Grant College Program are eligible to apply. These scholarships can be up to $4,000 per year for several years (depending on the anticipated time to complete the current degree). Mostly graduate students are chosen, but undergraduates can also apply. The Old Salt Scholarships are managed by the Aylesworth Foundation and funded by the Old Salt Fishing Club of St. Petersburg, Florida. The Old Salt scholarships are available only to graduate students at the University of South Florida. Applications for both programs are due at Florida Sea Grant by 4PM EST on November 5, 2007.
