Risk Assessment of Recycling Type X Drywall
Project Description: Gypsum
drywall is a major component of construction and demolition
(C&D) debris. Recycling of drywall is desired, and one method
of recycling is processing and application at the construction
site. A concern cited by some regarding job-site application of
scrap drywall from commercial construction projects pertains to
grinding of Type X drywall. Type X drywall contains
glass fibers to enhance fire resistance. Some have raised a concern
that when
processed (grinding and screening), the glass fibers would present an
airborne
health threat to workers and nearby residents. The industry on the
other hand,
contends that the fibers do not present a health threat. The
objective of this study is to assess the potential human health hazard
of
selected airborne particulates from the grinding of Type X drywall.
Status: A demonstration grinding of type X
drywall
was conducted on February 19, 2004.
Workers were equipped with sampling devices to collect airborne fiber,
total
dust, and respirable dust samples. See link for photos on the right.
Currently, samples have been sent for
analysis and are expected soon.
