Letter from the Department

Dear Prospective Applicant:

We are pleased to learn of your interest in graduate studies at the University of Florida. Our program and faculty are quite diverse with opportunities for classes and research in both the sciences and engineering. Please see our Graduate Research & Education Areas (also listed in the application package).

Graduate programs at the University of Florida (UF) are very flexible and represent independent mastery of a field of knowledge. Candidates for the ME/MS degrees must earn a minimum of 30 credits (thesis) or 30 credits (non-thesis option), with additional required core courses possibly being required, depending on the applicant's background. Doctoral programs require a minimum of 90 credits beyond the Bachelor’s degree. The student's Supervisory Committee has the responsibility for approving a plan of study. Each candidate for the Ph.D. is required to prepare and defend a dissertation that is acceptable to his/her committee and the Graduate School.

The Department admits graduate students in the Fall and Spring. Admission into our program requires a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for the last two years of undergraduate work and a minimum combined score of 1000 on the verbal and quantitative sections (a minimum of 500 in each) of the Graduate Record Examination. International applicants should achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 575 (computer equivalent score (232). The required statement of purpose should outline your background, specific interest in our program, and the proposed Graduate Research & Education Area for your graduate work. The general requirements for admission to the graduate program are similar for ME/MS and Ph.D. applicants; however, the admission criteria are more selective for Ph.D. applicants. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of satisfactory GRE scores, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, undergraduate and graduate academic records and acceptance by a departmental faculty advisor.

We highly recommend that applicants see our information on how to apply online where you will find all relevant application materials.   For more extensive information about the graduate programs available in Environmental Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida see these program links:

Concerning the possibility of admission and financial assistance in our Department, we can only evaluate your chances for admission and/or financial assistance in our graduate program after receiving your completed application packet. When submitting your application documents, please note that if you are seeking financial aid and applying for the Fall semester, all required documentation must be completed and received by us by February 1st. Decisions on departmental financial aid opportunities for Fall applicants will be made no later than March 15th each year, and often times earlier. Please be aware that financial aid may be available from individual faculty members separate and apart from financial aid offered directly by the Department. For Spring admission, all documentation must be received by October 1st . Decisions on departmental financial aid opportunities for Spring applicants, which are typically very limited, will be made on or about October 15th each year.

If you are NOT seeking financial aid and are applying for the Fall semester, all required documentation must be received by UF no later than April 1st. Final decisions will be made no later than May 1st. For Spring applicants, all documentation must be received no later than November 1st and final decisions will be made soon thereafter.

If you would like for anyone other than yourself or the academic staff at the University of Florida to have access to the information in your application file, you must provide written consent with the names of those who you wish to have access. This includes inquiries pertaining  to the status of your application. This cannot be sent through e-mail or fax. We strongly encourage you to send written consent to the Office of Admissions as well as to our department.
